What I Use in My Home
Here are all of my favorites— the products that I use in my own home (including personal care, at the bottom). If you’d rather do a detailed product comparison with health ratings, check out each category’s page in the shop.
Medley Couch
I have Medley’s Mota Bumper Sectional in natural latex and wool. The fabric is cotton canvas, the frame is solid wood, and it’s all made by hand in the US! It’s custom sized to be extra long for our long and skinny living room, and I love it. See all the couches I recommend and their ratings here.
The olive green rug I use under my couch is from Birch Lane. This one is made of mostly wool, without a backing, and I confirmed they didn't use any of the "big 5" in it — read more here, as well as see all of the rugs I recommend.
Organic Throw Pillows
I use an ever-changing combination of throw pillows. The inserts are the mini Avocado molded latex pillows (which doubles as my travel pillow!), Parachute down pillows, Magic Linen pillow covers, and hand-sewn pillow cases. See these and all the couch cushions I recommend here.
First-time guests are genuinely surprised that my TV, above, is not a framed photo. While I obviously chose this purely for its aesthetics and function rather than rating it for material health, it really does make the room feel calm, and fits in with the rest of my vintage olde tyme decorations. It’s the best.
Living Room
I have these olde tyme prints all over my house, including in the living room, because they’re pretty and so calming. I even have one downloaded and used on the Frame TV.
Portable Blackout Curtains
Most of the year, I love the light that the west-facing windows in my living room bring in, but in the summer months, it gets so, so hot. I use these suction cup blackout curtains from Sleepout in the evenings so the windows look nice and blind-free year-round, but stay cool when I pop these on. See all the blackout curtains and blinds I recommend here.
Air Purifier
I have the Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier in the living room for practical reasons: it covers 1,000 square feet, the filter lasts 5 years, and it’s not ugly. I also chose it for health reasons: when we get wildfire smoke, I’m most concerned about the toxic gases released from burning buildings and this has 15 pounds of VOC adsorbent for that. That also means it captures everyday odors and gasses as well. Quiet, and gimmick free. It’s great. See all the air purifiers I recommend here.
Bedroom
I love this pillow so much. It’s made of Talalay latex, which is softer than Dunlop latex, and is the perfect amount of squishy and supportive. I bought these for the guest room, but stole one for myself because I liked it so much. See all the pillows I recommend here.
Steel Bed Frame
I have an inexpensive bed frame from Amazon. It’s sturdy, super simple, made of steel, and matches my 1904 house’s vibe. See all the bed frames, including natural wood ones, that I recommend here.
I have a combination of pillows, including these molded latex ones from Avocado. They’re supportive, a little springy, and are so much healthier than memory foam. See all the pillows I recommend here.
Avocado Hybrid Mattress
I’ve had the Avocado Green Mattress for 6 years now and still love it. It’s made of organic latex and wool, and has a core of springs for support. See all of the organic mattresses I recommend, and their ratings here.
I use these wool duvet inserts from Woolroom. I use the Light option most of the year, and their Medium option during the winter. Super warm, but also thermoregulating, so I never get sweaty. See all the duvet inserts and comforters I recommend here.
I have so many Magic Linen products because their linen is OEKO TEX certified to be free of harmful chemicals, and comes in great colors. These moss colored pillowcases are the perfect combination with my other bedding right now. See all the pillowcases and bedding I recommend here.
Piglet in Bed Linen Sheets and Duvet Cover
The brand Piglet in Bed makes the softest linen I’ve ever experienced and it’s OEKO TEX certified. Their colors and prints are incredible, and I have their gingham duvet paired with colorful flat and fitted sheets. See all the bedding I recommend here.
I have this rug under my bed. It's so hard finding a rug that's the right color, size, price, and pattern, not to mention one made out of healthy materials. This one is mostly wool, with a simple canvas backing, and they don't use any of the "big 5" in it — read more here, as well as see all of the rugs I recommend.
I currently use a vintage lamp with these 25W incandescent bulbs on my night stand, so I don’t have any bright blue light disrupting my circadian rhythm right before bed. They’re so cozy. See all the healthier light bulbs and lamps I recommend here.
Dust Mite Encasement
I use this around my entire mattress (and have separate ones for every pillowcase) so that no dust mites (or mold spores!) can enter inside and make a home. The fabric’s pores are1 micron— smaller than dust mite feces or particles. This is polyester, soft, noise-free, and has OEKO TEX certification.
The Coway Airmega was one of my first “healthy home purchases” ever. I have their white one and use it in the bedroom because it’s so quiet and effective. It’s been on 24/7 for years and is still going strong. See all the air purifiers I recommend here.
Blackout Blinds
I use these IKEA black out blinds because they’re made with polyester instead of PVC, hide nicely behind my curtains, and are inexpensive for the many windows in my home. See all the blackout curtains I recommend here.
Bathroom
I use the Weddell Duo because it’s NSF certified to remove chlorine, PFAS, and microplastics, and they have the testing to prove it! I also like that I can see whether the filter needs an early change through the transparent casing. See all the shower filters I recommend here.
Kitchen
Indoor Air Quality Monitor
I use the Airthings View Plus in my kitchen to track PM 2.5 and VOCs from cooking, and to keep an eye on radon levels, since the kitchen is on the first floor. Code INTERIORMED-10OFF gets you10% off. See all the indoor air quality monitors I recommend here.
I have the OG Dorai dish rack, which is made of steel and sits atop a diatomaceous earth pad, so water evaporates super quickly. They don’t make this one anymore, but they do have other options, plus all of the other dish racks I recommend are here.
Dining Room
I love a frame made with real wood, and many of mine are vintage ones I find at thrift stores— some without glass anymore, haha. But, for this focal point of the house, I wanted it to look legit. I sent a photo I took to Framebridge to have it blown up to 24” x 36” and mounted in a walnut frame. They did such a good job.
I have the Prairie Pendant from Huey — it’s the first thing you see when you walk into my house. Made of ceramic and wood. See all the lighting strategies and lightbulbs I recommend for your health here.
I thought it was a good idea to put this mostly-white wool rug under the dining table. It wasn’t! It’s hard to keep clean! But I don’t care, it’s just so pretty. This is 100% wool, made without a backing, and I confirmed they didn't use any of the "big 5" in it — read more here, as well as see all of the rugs I recommend.
Home Office / Gym
I’ve used this exact Delonghi space heater for about 10 years now and it just keeps working. It’s made almost entirely of metal and gently heats my cold office without blowing dust or allergens around.
I use the Ananday yoga mat because it’s made of 100% cork without any glues, binders, or plastics. It’s super grippy. 20% off with code INTERIORMEDICINE. See all the yoga mats and props I recommend here.
EarthFoam Mattress
I have an EarthFoam springless mattress made of entirely GOLS certified latex for the guest room and oh my gosh, it’s comfortable. I chose the firm for good support, and have a mattress pad on top for side sleeping comfort. I’m jealous of my guests. See all the mattresses I recommend here.
I got this affordable mattress pad, made of GOLS certified latex, from SleepOnLatex, but it’s actually made by Earthfoam! I have this for the guest room and it adds the best soft layer on a firm mattress. See all mattress pads and their ratings here.
Guest Room
Flowerpot VP3 Table Lamp
When guests come, the last thing I want is for them to turn on the dreaded Big Light and ruin the ambience of their stay! So, I have this ultra cute table lamp set up with easy access to the switch. I use a warm incandescent bulb in it, and it’s very cozy. This is made out of metal and is the real deal— a much more affordable dupe is here.
Finishes
I use Rubio Monocoat’s Oil Plus 2C, which is a super-healthy, 0% VOC, stain and wood finish all in one. It colors wood and adds a protective layer in one coat, and if you don’t use the accelerator, which speeds drying time, it’s completely healthy. I have used the accelerator, and it smells vaguely like Elderberry syrup to me. Ha! Still sooo much better than standard stain. I love this stuff.
I needed to color match the green paint on my doors (above), but wanted it to be healthier than standard paint. So I did it through ECOS. I got their air purifying paint, so it’s not only zero VOC but also absorbs smells because it contains the mineral zeolite. See all the paint I recommend here.
Personal Care
Obviously, I specialize in healthy, non-toxic homes, but here are the organic clothes, accessories, clean beauty, travel products, and books I use, read, and love, if you’re curious.
I love products made with organic ingredients, but I also like high-performing actives, which are more often found in the conventional world. Here are the skincare products, makeup brands, whole-body goods, and hair care I use that strike my ideal combination of non-toxic and effective.
Organic and Non-Toxic Clothing
Since clothing is in even closer contact with me than my home, I look for organic, OEKO TEX certified, or at least all-natural fabric whenever I can, especially for undergarments and working out. I go for leather, metal, and clay accessories, too.
These are my favorite books about healthy design, holistic architecture, nutrition, cooking, herbs, medicine, and more.
