What I Use in My Home
Here are my favorites, that I use in my own home. If you’d rather do a detailed product comparison with health ratings, check out each category’s page in the Shop.
Bedroom
Bedside Light
I currently use a vintage lamp with 25W incandescent bulbs on my night stand, available here. If I ever switch things up for a more modern look, I’d go with this Loftie lamp that’s LED but goes very dim and has red lighting for night. See all the healthier light bulbs and lamps I recommend here.
Organic Hybrid Mattress
I’ve had the Avocado Green Mattress for 6 years now. I got the pillow top option for medium firmness, and still love it. There are so many great natural mattress options now— I have to admit I chose Avocado in part because their branding was cute, but I’m glad I did. See all the mattresses I recommend and their ratings here.
We have a combination of latex pillows— these firmer Dunlop ones for my husband, and these softer Talalay ones for me. Latex is supportive, a little springy and dense, and kind of feels like memory foam. See all the pillows I recommend here.
Steel Bed Frame
I have an inexpensive bed frame from Amazon. It’s sturdy, super simple, made of steel, and matches my 1904 house’s vibe. See all the bed frames, including natural wood ones, that I recommend here.
Dust Mite Encasement
I get to experience the joy of a dust mite allergy. I use this six-sided dust mite encasement around my entire mattress and every pillowcase so that no dust mites (or mold spores for that matter!) can enter inside and make a home. It’s important to choose one made of fabric that has holes 1 micron or less in size— smaller than dust mite feces. This is polyester, woven to 1 micron, and amazingly has OEKO TEX certification.
Wool Mattress Protector
I use this washable wool mattress protector on top of my encasement-sealed mattress and mattress topper, just under my sheets. I chose a wool protector because it is thermoregulating (see what that means here) and naturally repels moisture because of the lanolin that is a part of wool. Importantly, it’s washable. See all the mattress protectors I recommend here.
About half of my sheets and pillowcases are from Magic Linen (the other half are Piglet in Bed). I got them for their colors and OEKO TEX certification. Discount code IMBUNDLE get you 15% off bundles. See all the bedding I recommend here.
I use these wool duvet inserts from Woolroom. I use the Light option most of the year, and their Medium option during the winter. Super warm, but also thermoregulating, so I never get sweaty. See all the duvet inserts and comforters I recommend here.
Blackout Blinds
I use these IKEA black out blinds in my bedroom and guest room because they’re made with polyester instead of PVC, hide nicely behind my curtains, and are inexpensive for the many windows in my home. See all the blackout curtains I recommend here.
The Coway Airmega was my first “healthy home purchase” ever. I have their white one and use it in the bedroom because it’s so quiet and effective. It’s been on 24/7 for 4+ years and is still going strong. See all the air purifiers I recommend here.
Living Room
I have Medley’s Mota Bumper Sectional in natural latex and wool. The fabric is cotton canvas (which is now sold out). It’s custom sized to be extra long for our long and skinny living room. See all the couches I recommend and their ratings here.
Portable Blackout Curtains
Most of the year, I love the light that the west-facing windows in my living room bring in, but in the summer months, it gets so, so hot. I use these suction cup blackout curtains from Sleepout in the evenings so the windows look nice and blind-free year-round, but stay cool when I pop these on. See all the blackout curtains and blinds I recommend here.
Air Purifier
I have the Austin Air HealthMate Plus air purifier in the living room because it covers 1,000 square feet, and absorbs VOCs, which tend to be more prevalent in my house than PM 2.5. I also got it in part because the filter lasts 5 (!!) years and as far as air purifiers go, it’s not ugly. See all the air purifiers I recommend here.
Bathroom
I use the Weddell Duo because it’s NSF certified to remove chlorine, PFAS, and microplastics. I’ve also tried the Watersticks and Aquasana; this one is nice because it removes more and you can see whether the filter needs an early change through the transparent casing. See all the shower filters I recommend here.
Kitchen
Indoor Air Quality Monitor
I use the Airthings View Plus in my kitchen to track PM 2.5 and VOCs from cooking, and to keep an eye on radon levels, since the kitchen is on the first floor. Use code INTERIORMED-10OFF for 10% off. See all the indoor air quality monitors I recommend here.
I have the OG Dorai dish rack, which is made of steel and sits atop a diatomaceous earth pad, so water evaporates super quickly. They don’t make this one anymore, but they do have other options, plus all of the other dish racks I recommend are here.
Home Office / Gym
I’ve used this exact Delonghi space heater for about 10 years now and it just keeps working. It’s made almost entirely of metal and gently heats my cold office without blowing dust or allergens around.
I use the Ananday yoga mat because it’s made of 100% cork without any glues, binders, or plastics. It’s super grippy. 20% off with code INTERIORMEDICINE. See all the yoga mats and props I recommend here.
Guest Room
I have an EarthFoam springless mattress made of entirely GOLS certified latex for the guest room and oh my gosh, is it comfortable. I chose the firm for good support, and have a mattress pad on top for side sleeping comfort. I’m jealous of my guests. See all the mattresses I recommend here.
Sleep On Latex has the most affordable mattress pad, made of GOLS certified latex. Even their thicker 3” version is affordable. I have this for the guest room and it adds the best soft layer on a firm mattress. See all mattress pads and their ratings here.
Finishes
I use Rubio Monocoat’s Oil Plus 2C, which is a super-healthy, 0% VOC, stain and wood finish all in one. It colors wood and adds a protective layer in one coat, and if you don’t use the accelerator, which speeds drying time, it’s completely healthy. I have used the accelerator, and it smells vaguely like Elderberry syrup to me. Ha! Still sooo much better than standard stain. I love this stuff.
I needed to color match the green paint on my doors (above), but wanted it to be healthier than standard paint. So I did it through ECOS. I got their air purifying paint, so it’s not only zero VOC but also absorbs smells because it contains the mineral zeolite. See all the paint I recommend here.
Cleaning
These are the best bathroom, kitchen, laundry and general home cleaning products I’ve found— they come in unscented or 100% organic essential oil scented varieties and their ingredients lists are incredibly short and understandable.
I got this shark vacuum for its anti-allergy seal and HEPA filtration so it doesn’t kick dust back up when you use it. The amount of stuff it picks up is always horrifying and humbling.
Cordless Vacuum Mop Combo
The Tineco iFloor 3 is the most satisfying thing I own. It’s the best vacuum- mop combo I’ve found because it cleans my hardwood floors in one go, and its self-cleaning function is so cool. I use my own cleaning solution— a teaspoon of Aunt Fannie’s Hardwood Floor Cleaner and warm water.
