How to choose a non-toxic shower curtain

Water-proof fabrics are notoriously toxic, but organic fabrics are susceptible to mold, which is toxic in itself. It can make finding a truly healthy shower curtain tricky. Here’s the strategy we recommend:

➜ If your bathroom has good ventilation, and you are up for regular maintenance, you can go with the healthiest materials: a GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified fabric and plant-based wax.

➜ If your bathroom has good ventilation, and you are up for weekly washes instead of waxing, go with a a hemp fabric, which tends to dry faster than cotton or linen.

➜ If your bathroom has OK ventilation, and you’re up for weekly washes, choose an OEKO-TEX certified polyester fabric. This is one of the only places I’m a fan of polyester— it’s water resistant and less susceptible to mold and mildew.

➜ Finally, if your bathroom has OK or bad ventilation, or you know you’re not up for maintenance, choose a PEVA or EVA liner that doesn’t off-gas. While these are less healthy than natural fabrics or polyester, they are still healthier than PVC… or a moldy curtain 😝.
