Heaters

Boldr Kelvin

The Kelvin is a sleek wall panel that, like a sauna, uses far infrared heat. Used as a healing therapeutic, far infrared heat warms you and objects in the room gently, rather than using convection heat, which warms up the air first. It also doesn’t blow dust around, and is energy efficient. It’s aesthetically pleasing (also comes in white) and means there’s no risk of tipping over a floor heater. Confirmed via email this contains no Prop 65 chemicals including PTFEs. 15% off with code INTERIORMEDICINE.

Objecto Foot Heater

If you suffer from cold feet, this is the best solution. I use this sleek foot heater every day when I’m working on Interior Medicine’s website and answering emails. It works for both standing and sitting, keeping me active, and doesn’t blow dust around, keeping me from sneezing. Confirmed via email this contains no Prop 65 chemicals including PTFEs.

DeLonghi Radiant Heater

There are a few advantages of radiant heaters like this—they don’t blow dust around, and they’re relatively affordable. This one, which I’ve personally used for 10+ years now, is made almost entirely of metal, so it’s also a low plastic heater. One concern that’s been brought up to me several times is whether it contains Teflon (AKA PTFE, a type of PFAS). The answer is most probably, yes. Many heaters and heat pumps still do. I emailed DeLonghi several times and like most big heater companies, they’re evasive about it. However! I still use it, for 3 reasons: one, if it contains PFAS, they’re either in the cord or inside the unit. Since I touch the heater twice a year when I get it out and put it away, my dermal exposure is miniscule. Second, assuming the PTFEs are inside, it would need to be heated to above 500°F before they’re released into the air— this is achievable when cooking with Teflon, but units like this do not reach 200°F before they shut off for safety. I wish PFAS were not used in heaters, and I don’t appreciate the lack of transparency in the entire industry. That said, I wanted to walk you through my train of though about weighing the benefits of the product vs. the risks of exposure.

Blueair Air Purifier-Heater Combo

It’s no secret that I like Blueair’s air purifiers— they’re effective, transparent about test results, and more affordable than many. I’m happy to see they offer 3-in-1 air machines that cool, heat, and purify. They offer two sizes, one for smaller rooms and one for larger rooms, and two colors— black and white. Instead of alerting you to change the filter on a set schedule like many machines, it keeps track of pollution levels over time and reminds you through the app, which is a smart bonus.
