Good news about mattresses

Some super good news— actually healthy mattresses are getting less expensive, and options are growing rapidly. It’s a perfect example of people demanding healthier design and the market responding accordingly.

Why bother with a healthy mattress? Because regular mattresses are made with polyurethane foam, which is created with six chemicals, including isocyanates and dibutylin, both well-known carcinogens. Additives including endocrine-disrupting Flame Retardants and antimicrobials are often mixed in to the foam. And, the layers of foam are held together with adhesives that off-gas VOCs.

For a country so confused about where all the cancer and infertility is coming from, it’s just crazy this is still the standard.

One of the first “healthy home” things I bought was our mattress 6 years ago, because we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed. We opted for an Avocado (disclosure: I became an affiliate with them because I recommend it so often). We still love it. But there are so many brands and variations to choose from now!

Also, people are also wising up to which materials and certifications actually matter, so healthwashing isn’t as much of an issue as it once was. I’m so heartened. I have 7 legit mattresses on the site now, with an annoying amount of detail about how I evaluated them. Happy sleeping!
