Here’s my weird theory….

I think choosing the right rug is so much harder than choosing other furniture, not because you have to consider size, color, and price…but because something a little woo-woo is going on. Here’s what I mean.

Rugs have been considered magical for thousands of years, long before Aladdin and Jasmine’s famous 1992 magic carpet ride. Even back in biblical times they were magical: King Solomon reportedly received a green carpet from God that was 60 miles long, 60 miles wide, and could carry his army anywhere in the world.

In the 17th century, rugs were revered— they were hung on walls to avoid being walked upon, and they show up as prized objects all the time in still life paintings.

And acccording to Alessandra Covini, rugs aren’t just rugs— they frame ritual areas in our living and dining rooms—  the sacred acts of being together and eating together. They mark a space that orders the confusion of life into temporary perfection.

So no wonder the pressure is so intense! We’re not just buying a furnishing, we’re buying a symbol that has been special for thousands of years. That’s my theory, anyhow.

Stay tuned for Part 2 about how to choose healthier rugs!
