Is PLA safe?

In short, maybe.

PLA is a bio-plastic made from corn, sugarbeets, or potatoes, and has been showing up a lot lately as an eco-friendly filling option in comforters.

Admittedly, it does sound nice, but the jury is still out on whether it is safe for humans, and if it actually composts as well as we hoped. While admittedly better for the environment than extracting more fossil fuels, it is toxic in liquid and vapor form, endangering the people involved in manufacturing.

If you’re choosing between PLA and polyester, PLA might be a slightly better choice. Otherwise, spend your money on a truly natural option.
